Zoo Med Eco Earth Coconut Chips
Zoo Med® Eco Earth Coconut Chips are made from natural coconut coir sourced from an environmentally friendly, renewable material. This highly absorbent substrate can hold up to eight times its dry weight in water, retaining moisture effectively and slowly releasing it to help maintain a warm, humid, tropical habitat suitable for many reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
The coconut chips can be used on their own for species that require high humidity or to create localized humid areas within an enclosure. They are also well suited for bioactive setups. When blended into a bioactive soil mix, the larger chip size improves airflow, prevents soil compaction, and promotes proper drainage—key factors for healthy live plant growth and beneficial clean-up crew organisms.
Designed for long-term use, Coconut Chips are naturally resistant to mold, reducing the need for frequent replacement. After use, the substrate can be composted or reused in houseplants or garden soil.
Key Features:
Natural coconut coir substrate from a renewable, eco-friendly source
Ideal for bioactive and naturalistic terrarium environments
Coarse texture enhances aeration, resists compaction, and supports drainage
Durable and naturally mold-resistant
Excellent moisture absorption and retention (up to 8× its dry weight)
Suitable for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates
To prepare, soak the brick in a bucket of water for approximately 30 minutes. Break apart any remaining pieces and gently squeeze out excess water. Use the expanded coconut chips directly in the terrarium or mix them with other substrates to create a custom blend suited to your setup. Spot clean the substrate daily, and fully replace it every 3–6 months, or as needed.
After expansion, the Coconut Chips can be allowed to dry for use in drier habitats. Moisture levels can be adjusted by misting or adding water according to the needs of your enclosure.
